You Kill Me

I’m glad to see Ben Kingsley passed up Cleaver for this.

Kingsley stars as Frank – an alcoholic assassin for the Buffalo mob ordered to San Francisco and Alcoholics Anonymous after screwing up a whacking and leaving his mafia family in severe danger.  Now, he has picked up a part time job, found a sponsor in Tom (Owen Wilson) and new love with Laurel (Tea Leoni).

Can Frank overcome his addiction?  Will he be able to have a real relationship with Laurel?  Will he ever return to Buffalo?

Believe it or not, You Kill Me is a comedy, and a very funny one at that.  Director John Dahl and writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely make the most of an absurd situation, but deliver a comedy much more deadpan than animated, which is a welcome relief from silly, obvious movies (like the Fantastic Four).

Dialogue verges on the macabre with Frank describing mistakes he has made, trying to be honest with his friend by telling them what he does for a living and more, all made even more hilarious as we see the reactions of those around our hitman. Some jokes are predictable, and You Kill Me gets a bit too serious towards the end (after being a dark comedy for so long), but Dahl and the team make up for it with a funny climax

3 Waffles (Out of 4)

You Kill Me is rated R for language and some violence.
