The
Last Sin Eater
The
Last Sin Eater is an
ambitious movie, but maybe a bit too ambitious as it becomes three
movies
crammed into one.
Set in 1850, Liana Liberato
stars as Cadi – a troubled 10-year old girl searching for
peace. She is
haunted by a horrible incident that
has torn apart her family, driving a massive wedge between her and her
mother
(Elizabeth Lackey). Now,
Cadi, after the
death of her grandmother, has learned about the ancient Welsh tradition
of sin
eating, and wants the ritual performed on her, even though it is only
done on
the dead. Despite
warnings not to go
looking for the tortured soul who takes on the sins of the dead, so
they may go
to heaven, Cadi and her friend, Fagan (Soren Fulton), are on a mission
that
threatens to expose the town’s darkest secrets.
What will they find in the
hills and caves of Appalachia? Who is this mysterious sin
eater?
Co-writer/director Michael
Landon, Jr., along with co-writer Brian Bird (based on the novel by
Francine
Rivers), is trying to tackle three different stories and tie them
together,
which is too much to attempt with this movie. The
Last Sin Eater
is not a bad film, and has many thrilling and
emotional moments (even a few scary ones that will have you jumping out
of your
seat), but it feels torn apart by the competing plots -
Cadi’s search for inner
peace, the plot about the mysterious stranger who preaches to Cadi and
Fagan,
and the big surprise developments that expose the town’s
history. No matter
how hard Landon tries, it doesn’t all
go together.
Landon knows how to draw us
in, and makes want us to know what is going to happen next, which
makes The
Last Sin Eater a movie that will get your
attention if you go.
