Back Shelf Beauties

Freaky Friday

If you truly want to feel freaky, try being a 31-year old single guy sitting in a theater full of teen girls and their moms while watching this movie. To say I didn't fit in is the understatement of the century. It makes you feel old pretty darn fast. Thank God the film was funny and the crowd paid more attention to the screen than to the lonely fat guy sitting in the back. Freaky Friday is a good chance for people who remember the original film to enjoy it with a group of kids who weren't even alive way back then.

Lindsay Lohan stars as Anna Coleman - a 15-year old girl misunderstood by her Mom, hated by the preppies, despised by her English teacher, annoyed by her little brother and infatuated with an older boy who has a face made for Tiger Beat magazine, Jake (Chad Murray). Everything seems to be haywire in Anna's life, but it's only going to get crazier.

Anna's mom, Dr. Tess Coleman (Jamie Lee Curtis), is about to get remarried to a very cool guy, Ryan (Mark Harmon), which has led to a large falling out between the two of them. Mom and daughter seem to be at each other's throats with an inability to understand each other's feelings, until a mysterious spell is cast on them and they switch bodies, and lives, for one very important day.

Will Tess and Anna screw up each other's lives?

Freaky Friday is an entertaining film that showcases two very talented actresses with great comedic ability. It's a fun movie because Curtis and Lohan are perfectly paired and hilarious. Curtis brilliantly channels the spirit, mind and emotion of a 15-year old girl battling with life's problems and a desire to break out of it all. She hits every line and pratfall with zeal, and without making a fool of herself. It's one of the best female comedic performances I have seen in a long time. Lohan also does a wonderful job, but hers is a little tougher.

The young actress is forced to embody the spirit, mind and emotion of a middle aged woman troubled by her children, afraid of a new life and trying to juggle a hectic career. I can't imagine that Lohan has a clue what any of this is like, but she carries it off very well. In a snap, the precocious teen becomes a mature woman, and that's a great acting job.

If you have been looking for a fun movie to share with your family, you should be in good hands with Freaky Friday. Grade: A-
