Saw
Get ready for one of the scariest movies you will ever see!
Leigh Whannell stars as Adam - a young man who wakes up underwater in a bathtub
in the world's grossest bathroom. He emerges from the water to discover he
is chained to one end of the room. Dr. Lawrence Gordon (Carl Elwes) is chained
to the other side of the room. In the middle, a dead body is holding a tape
recorder with instructions.
Why are they there? Who is responsible? Will they be able to carry out the
demands of their captor?
With a great scenario, wonderful twists and a smart story that is part sicko
thriller and part crime drama, Saw is
one of the best scary films I have ever seen. Whannell and director James
Wan wrote the script that has some of the most shocking, unpredictable moments
I can recall because they are willing to walk a fine line between traditional
and sick terror. While we have all seen shocking movies that terrify us,
not many come close to Saw in telling
a gripping story deriving its dramatic impact from smart script choices.
It's the twists and turns and originality that make
Saw scary, not an abundance of gross
out scenes with plenty of gore (although
Saw has one or two of those). Like the
great scary movies of all time, Wan implies the violence, has us on the edge
of our seats for the frightening moments, and, along with Whannell, comes
up with some of the most twisted stuff you have never imagined. Let's just
say, I'm glad they choose to follow the law instead of carrying out the type
of plot they lay out in this movie. It's the kind of direction and movie
that will make Wan a superhot commodity in Hollywood. You can almost hear
his phone ringing right now.
In a cast full of vets like Carl Elwes, Danny Glover and Monica Potter (who
I am starting to love again), Whannell stands out as the next Colin Farrell.
He blew me away with his performance as the guy who just ended up in the
wrong place at the wrong time. You feel his fear, you see the wheels turning
in his head as he starts to figure everything out, and you get to see him
react realistically to unbelievable stuff. With good looks, and his Aussie
roguish charm, Whannell is poised for big things in Hollywood.
Saw is a perfect movie for Halloween
weekend or any time you want a good thrill.
