Nothing to
Lose
Nothing to Lose has one of the craziest pairings in movie history. Tim Robbins
has been well known for his high minded fare like Bob Roberts and Dead Man
Walking, while Martin Lawrence leans toward slapstick like Bog Momma's House.
Together, they balance like a teeter-totter - Robbins is brought towards
slapstick, while Lawrence shows some nice acting chops.
Robbins stars as Nick, an advertising executive on top of the world. He has
a beautiful wife, Ann (Kelly Preston), a good job and a nice house. However,
this world collapses when he arrives home early from work to find his wife
in the heat of passion with his boss, Phillip (Michael McKean).
Nick starts to drive around town, eventually ending up in a seedy neighborhood,
where he is robbed at gunpoint by T-Paul (Martin Lawrence). However, Nick
isn't about to let this guy push him around after everything else he has
faced that day, so he kidnaps T-Paul and drives him into the desert. Of course,
once in the desert, they bond, hatch a scheme and try to make it succeed.
T-Paul is going to help Nick rob his boss of everything he owns.
Will they succeed? Can Nick go through with the plan? Can they trust each
other?
If you are offended by four letter words, DON'T RENT THIS MOVIE. It is full
of cursing. While the plot is not groundbreaking, it was a pleasure to see
Martin Lawrence develop a multi-dimensional character who is more than a
carjacker. He has some very tender moments that show his acting ability to
be more versatile than cursing and dressing up in drag.
Robbins has always had a nice talent for comedy, witnessed in such films
as Bull Durham, Hudsucker Proxy and Cadillac Man. He gets a little too silly
here, and doesn't face the same acting challenge faced by Lawrence, but
entertains with his physical ability.
If you want to try something out of left field, not necessarily the greatest
movie ever, try Nothing To Lose, when you have nothing to lose.
