The Nightmare Before Christmas
In 3-D

When The Nightmare Before Christmas came out back in 1993, it was unlike any movie any of us had ever seen before.  Tim Burton was riding high after Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, Batman, Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands, so moviegoers expected to see the unexpected in his movies, but this was even more than anyone anticipated.  Now, it’s back in 3-D, and looking more amazing than ever.

Based on his characters and story, The Nightmare Before Christmas is a twisted, imaginative holiday musical about the Pumpkin King, Jack Skellington (voiced by Chris Sarandon, singing by Danny Elfman), growing tired of Halloween, and finding new life and spirit when he accidentally wanders into Christmas Town.  With a heart full of joy, but not an exact knowledge of how Christmas works, Jack recruits the people of Halloween Town to seize Christmas and make the holiday into their own, with unforeseen consequences.

Sometimes, converting a popular movie into 3-D for re-release can be a cheap, cynical corporation’s attempt to wring a few extra dollars out of a property (not that I would EVER accuse Disney of that, no way, nope, couldn’t happen), but The Nightmare Before Christmas feels like it should have always been in 3-D.  I even remember back in 1993 how many of my friends felt it almost looked like it was in 3-D already, but they could have never imagined it would look this good and crisp.

Instead of exposing flaws, the 3-D effect gives the audience a new appreciation for the animation and shows you incredible, mind-blowing detail in each character as they are right in your face throughout the movie (you’ll never look at Oogie Boogie the same way again)   Plus, the music sounds better than ever as each character reaches out to the audience with their tale.  Best of all, the 3-D effect does nothing to remove the heart and soul of the movie, and it still feels more original than almost anything else out there.
