The Motorcycle
Diaries
If the movie wasn't based on a book by Che Guevara, most people wouldn't
be paying attention, and that's too bad. The Motorcycle
Diaries is a compelling adventure by two young men who take a
chance to see the world.
Gael Garcia Bernal stars as Ernesto (AKA Che Guevara) - a young medical student
who has teamed with his pal, Alberto Granado (Rodrigo de la Serna), to cross
the South American continent from Argentina to Venezuela. With a little money
in their pockets and an aging motorcycle, they begin their travels with little
idea what awaits them.
The Motorcycle Diaries might seem like
a movie produced to make all those hipsters feel good about wearing Che Guevara
t-shirts, but it has very little to do with Guevara or his politics. Director
Walter Salles and writer Jose Rivera (based on the book by Granado and Guevara)
show us moments you might consider to be important to Che's belief system,
but most of the film is an entertaining buddy picture showing us two friends
having the type of adventure we all have had in our lives at some point.
Bernal and de la Serna are wonderfully natural and engaging, which makes
the movie fun for us no matter what you think of Guevara. It gets a little
slow in the middle, but you'll have a good time overall.
